Thordon Bearings, renowned for its innovative, water-lubricated, non-polluting marine shaft bearings and seals, is making a significant mark in the global mining industry with its Thor-Flex seal technology. This breakthrough is particularly evident in the demanding world of pneumatic cylinder applications, where Thordon’s solutions are not just surviving but thriving under harsh conditions. 

In a collaboration between Thordon Bearings and RMH Industries, Thordon’s authorized distributor in Quebec, a significant operational challenge was addressed. The project involved refurbishing 28 pneumatic cylinders used for unloading mining dump wagons, a task that demands reliability and durability given the abrasive conditions typically encountered in mining environments.

These cylinders, crucial for the operation, are equipped with two seals each, sized 711mm (28in) and 635mm (25in) in diameter, operating at a pressure of 861 kPa (125 psi). The original rubber seals were falling short, necessitating a more robust solution to extend service life and enhance performance. 

Recognizing the need for a superior sealing solution, RMH Industries recommended the adoption of Thordon’s Thor-Flex seals. Thor-Flex, an elastomeric polymer material known for its high mechanical strength and self-lubricating properties, was identified as an ideal candidate for these extreme conditions.

This material not only offers superior yield strength compared to other seals on the market but also exhibits high resistance to permanent deformation, ensuring reliability in temperatures ranging from -50°C to +90°C (-60°F to 195°F) and pressures up to 103

MPa (15,000 psi).

The replacement of the previous rubber seals with Thor-Flex seals has yielded remarkable results, with the customer reporting that the cylinders now have a considerably longer service life before requiring refurbishment. Additionally, the Thor-Flex seals provide better sealing capabilities than conventional materials, addressing the persistent issue of operational inefficiency due to seal failure in tough mining conditions.
