A Revolution in Thermal Power Generation: Extending Service Intervals with Thordon Bearings

In the challenging and dynamic world of thermal power generation, the reliability and longevity of components are of paramount importance. An industry case study of Termo Electrica Barranquilla SA (TEBSA), the largest thermal power plant in Colombia, showcases the transformative potential of innovative solutions in extending service intervals of low-speed applications. This change was made possible through the combined efforts of TEBSA, Thordon, and Thordon’s authorized distributor in Colombia, Delta Marine and River Services (DMARs).

TEBSA’s power plant, which meets 12% of Colombia’s national energy demand and a whopping 45% of the Caribbean demand, experienced a persistent issue with its water supply to the cooling system. The water, drawn from the Magdalena River, required a sieve filter to remove abrasives, supported by a rotating shaft fitted with two bronze bearings. This system was operating at a relatively slow pace of about 2 rpm and used grease for lubrication. Unfortunately, the combination of the environmental dust and the abrasives in the water resulted in frequent wear and tear on the bronze bearings, necessitating replacement every three months.

TEBSA, understandably eager to find a solution to this high-maintenance and high-cost problem, turned to Thordon, a renowned bearing solutions provider. This was where Thordon’s dedicated distributor, DMARs, stepped in to offer unparalleled expert support.

DMARs representatives promptly visited the TEBSA facility to analyze the problem at hand and discuss potential solutions. They recommended Thordon’s ThorPlas-Blue bearings, known for their load tolerance and ability to operate grease-free – a direct answer to the challenge posed by the abrasive-laden environment at TEBSA’s plant.

The implementation of ThorPlas-Blue bearings in July 2014 marked a turning point for TEBSA. The new bearings not only solved the previous issue of accelerated wear but also proved to be impressively durable. After two and a half years of operation, the ThorPlas-Blue bearings showed a mere 1mm (0.039in) of wear, contrasting starkly with the quarterly replacement schedule of the old bronze bearings.

This success story is a testament to the expert support a qualified Thordon Distributor like DMARs can provide to its customers. But the story doesn’t end there. Following the significant improvements in system reliability and the associated cost savings, TEBSA consulted with DMARs on other equipment issues, including pump and sand trap failures.

With their expertise in abrasive environments, DMARs recommended Thordon’s Composite bearings for use in the pumps. This recommendation was so successful that TEBSA requested the pump OEM in Mexico specify Thordon Composite bearings for two new pumps.

This case study illustrates the importance of industry-specific knowledge and expert support when it comes to resolving recurring issues in heavy-duty operations like thermal power plants. The professional expertise of Thordon’s authorized distributors can provide reliable and cost-effective solutions that stand the test of time. The collaboration between TEBSA, Thordon, and DMARs has truly paved the way for more efficient and sustainable thermal power generation in Colombia, setting a model for others in the industry to follow

While this incredible transformation took place at TEBSA’s plant in Colombia, businesses in Ontario, Canada, can also take advantage of the same level of expert support. Thordon’s well-established global network of distributors ensures that the same high quality of service is maintained irrespective of geographical location.
